Coolangatta ( 34°51′S, 150°43′E) is an historic area in Australia, on the north shore of the Shoalhaven River on the New South Wales south coast.
Coolangatta is a local aboriginal word meaning "splendid view". In 1822 Scotsman Alexander Berry settled and built an estate in the area, he was the first European to settle in the Shoalhaven area.
In 1846 the brigantine ship Coolangatta, named by Berry for his estate, was wrecked on what is today Queensland's Gold Coast. It's from that ship that the better known Coolangatta, Queensland gets its name.
Coolangatta is Shoalhaven's first settlement. The impressive home and grounds of the first white settler, Alexander Berry, is now restored and operates as a resort. The history of the area and in particular of the esteemed Mr Berry, gives a fascinating account of pioneer spirit and adventure.
Behind the settlement lies its namesake, the sentinel Coolangatta Mountain. Coolangatta is a Koori native name meaning splendid view.
A bustling and colourful crafts centre is also located at Coolangatta. Some of the prettiest, harmonic meldings of rural lands, river flats, ocean, bush and mountains are seen in the Coolangatta Shoalhaven Heads area.
